About Steve Sabo
For 50 years, Steve has been creating various items from wood. As a small boy,
his father and grandfather encouraged Steve and taught him the basic skills
required to become proficient in the art of working with wood. Working in his
studio in Nogal, New Mexico, his abilities become apparent when one looks at the
furniture, hand carved utensils and array of hand turned wood art he has
created.
While traveling around the world for his job as International Sales Manager for
a construction equipment manufacturer, he has had the opportunity to meet many
international wood artisans. Many of Steve’s creations incorporate ideas shared
by these international contacts.
Steve has been recognized for his hand turned wood art when he was awarded “Best
in Show” at the New Mexico State Fair. Always willing to share his knowledge and
abilities, he is the past president of the Mountaintop Turners of which he is a
founding member and has given demonstrations on various aspects of turning wood
on a lathe, turning techniques and use of homemade fixtures and finishes. This
knowledge has been shared with various wood turning clubs throughout the
country.
Inspired by the wood itself, Steve has come to realize that working with wood
“is a serendipitous adventure. One never knows what to expect until you get
inside of it and can fully appreciate what the good Lord has given us to work
with”.
